Jack Swarbrick Will Be ND's New AD

posted by Luke on Wed 16 of Jul, 2008 [16:00 UTC]
Jack Swarbrick is set to become Notre Dame's new Athletic Director, a post that was vacated by Kevin White, when he moved on to become the Athletic Director at Duke.

Professional Experience from his Baker and Daniels Profile:

Jack Swarbrick's clients have included individual athletes, owners of sports teams and organizations which sanction or conduct athletic competitions. He has served as general counsel for numerous national governing bodies of Olympic sports, including USA Gymnastics and USRowing. As a result of these representations and his extensive experience as an event organizer (see civic activities below), Jack has also served as a consultant to communities hosting or desiring to attract athletic events. He formerly served as the President and CEO of LMiV, LLC.

Wikipedia:

John B. "Jack" Swarbrick1 is an American sports attorney reported to be the new athletic director at the University of Notre Dame.2

Notre Dame has scheduled a press conference at 12:30 pm on Wednesday, July 16, 2008, to formally introduce Swarbrick as the school's new athletic director. Swarbrick will be replacing Kevin White, who abruptly resigned in June 2008 to take the same position at Duke University.3

Swarbrick, who earned an undergraduate degree from Notre Dame in 1976, and a law degree from Stanford in 1980, is a partner in the law firm of Baker & Daniels.14 He served as chairman of the Indiana Sports Corp. from 1992 until 2001; during his tenure, he helped get the NCAA to locate its headquarters in Indianapolis.4

Previously, Swarbrick was considered for athletic director positions at Indiana University and Stanford University.citation needed In 2007, he was considered for the position of commissioner of the Big 12 Conference, and in 2002 he was a finalist for the position of NCAA president, which went to Myles Brand.5

He was the vice-president of the team that successfully bid to host Super Bowl XLVI in 2012 in Indianapolis.6

Sawbrick has been a member of the Indiana bar since 1980 and is also admitted to practice in the Supreme Court and the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals.1

Steve Orsini has taken his name out of contention for Notre Dame's Athletic Director position. Here are a few quotes and links.

"I have a great deal of respect for Notre Dame, its administration and its athletics department, but I am committed to staying at SMU," Orsini said in a statement. "There is tremendous potential on the Hilltop, and I am excited about the future here. I want to thank our administration for its continued support and reiterate our goal of becoming a top-25 athletic department."

"I am pleased to announce that Steve Orsini will remain at SMU as director of athletics," school president Dr. R. Gerald Turner said in a statement released by the school. "I met with Steve Friday and reiterated my desire for him to stay. I am delighted that he has decided to continue to lead our athletic programs."

An Authentic Reprint of Knute's Win One For the Gipper in 3 Easy Installments

posted by Luke on Wed 02 of Jul, 2008 [14:00 UTC]
Steiner Sports has signed an exclusive contract with Knute Rockne's Estates to sell an exclusive line of Rockne photos and other original products including a reprint of his 'Win One for the Gipper" speech.

Knute's son Jack says:

"I am thrilled to have Notre Dame Collectible's by Steiner Sports working with our family," said Rockne's son, Jack Rockne. "This unique partnership will allow Notre Dame fans to be part of a truly unique and special line of product, the first of its kind. It will be very exciting for Notre Dame fans and football collectors alike."

From Knute Rockne All-American:

ROCKNE:

Well, boys ... I haven't a thing to say.
Played a great game...all of you. Great game.
(He tries to smile.)
I guess we just can't expect to win ‘em all.
(Rockne pauses and says quietly.)
I'm going to tell you something I've kept to myself for years --
None of you ever knew George Gipp.
It was long before your time.
But you know what a tradition he is at Notre Dame...
(There is gentle, faraway look in his eyes as he recalls the boy's words.)
And the last thing he said to me — "Rock," he said -
"sometime, when the team is up against it — and the
breaks are beating the boys — tell them to go out there
with all they got and win just one for the Gipper...
(Knute's eyes become misty and his voice is unsteady as he finishes.)
I don't know where I'll be then, Rock", he said - "but
I'll know about it - and I'll be happy."

There is a hushed stillness as Rockne and the crowd of boys look at each other. In the midst of this tense silence, Rockne quietly says "Alright," to the men beside him, and his chair is wheeled slowly out of the dressing room.

Watch Sean Astin Parade Around in Laporte

posted by Luke on Wed 02 of Jul, 2008 [13:40 UTC]
Sean Astin is headlining Laporte's Fourth of July Parade this year. His wife's family is from Rolling Prairie, if you are wondering why he would be doing the parade. Of course, we all know him from Rudy, Goonies and the Lord of the Rings.

Here's the part of the article pertaining to him:

Sean Astin, the star of "Rudy'' and other major box office films will headline LaPorte's Fourth of July parade.

As this year's grand parade marshal, Astin will be the 71st unit in the 62nd annual parade sponsored by the LaPorte? Jaycees.

"We're real excited about him being here,'' said Dawn Zigler, LaPorte? Jaycees parade president.

Zigler said Astin's contact with the area is his wife's family in the Rolling Prairie area. His appearance reflects this year's parade theme "honoring community service'' because of Astin's longtime practice of giving back.

And, it's only fitting, perhaps, given he skyrocketed to fame playing Rudy Ruettinger, a walk-on football player at the University of Notre Dame.

Astin doesn't live in LaPorte? but has signed footballs in the past for the Jaycees to sell to buy Christmas gifts for needy children here.

"We're lucky to have him,'' Zigler said.

Another One (AD Candidate) Bites The Dust

posted by Luke on Thu 26 of Jun, 2008 [02:40 UTC]
Joe Castiglione has agreed to a pay raise of $20,000 per year (he now makes $700K per annum) along with a bonus of $300,000 if he stays at ((Oklahoma)) until 2014. This raise pretty much closes the door on him becoming the next Athletic Director at Notre Dame.

image

Here's a quote from the article:

Castiglione, whose name has been mentioned in connection with the vacant athletic director's job at Notre Dame, said he had done nothing to fuel speculation he might leave Oklahoma.

"All I can do is demonstrate the importance of the role I have at Oklahoma and lead this athletic program and serve the institutional mission in a way that I've been privileged to do, and that has to speak for itself," he said. "I don't really ever comment on anything else other than that."

The door opens just a little wider for Steve Orsini.

Inside Linebacker Glenn Carson Ready To Choose?

posted by Luke on Mon 23 of Jun, 2008 [23:16 UTC]

Notre Dame recently offered a scholarship to inside linebacker Glenn Carson of Southern Regional High School in New Jersey, but may have been a little too late according to recent Rutgers commit, Gerald Hodges. He claims that Carson currently has Rutgers at the top of his list.

An article on NJ.com states:

He said the recruiting word he has is that inside linebacker Glenn Carson of Southern Regional High School, who was recently offered by Notre Dame, and cornerback Logan Ryan of Eastern High in Voorhees also have Rutgers as their leaders and may be ready to commit. Both are among the best at their positions in the country.

Coach Charlie Weis has faced tougher odds in the past so it would not surprise me if he is able to get Carson to commit.

Manti Te'o: All In The Family?

posted by Luke on Thu 19 of Jun, 2008 [13:41 UTC]
As many Notre Dame fans were excited by the news of Charlie Weis and several assistants visiting Manti Te'o, it is likely, unfortunately, that he will look elsewhere to play college football. Where will he end up? Luckily, the same reasons that keep him from coming to Notre Dame will also keep him from going to USC.

Not only have Te'o's cousins, Malosi Te'o and Shiloa Te'o, committed to Brigham Young, but a third cousin, Levi Te'o is leaning heavily towards Brigham Young. Another family member (I have heard that he is Manti Te'o's brother, though I have been unable to substantiate it), Jray Galea'i also has committed to Brigham Young.

When you add the family ties to the already systemic advantages of Brigham Young for any LDS football player, it looks more and more likely that Manti Te'o will spurn Notre Dame and USC and commit to Brigham Young.

Former Irish Kicker Bob Thomas Inducted Into McQuaid Hall of Fame

posted by Luke on Tue 17 of Jun, 2008 [16:37 UTC]
Bob Thomas graduated from Notre Dame in 1974 and later kicked in the NFL for the Chicago Bears, San Diego Chargers?, Detroit Lions and New York Giants?. He was recently inducted into the McQuaid Jesuit High School hall of fame.

Currently, he sits on the Illinois Supreme Court. In 1998 he won the NCAA Silver Anniversary Award.

Coincidentally, Alan Page, another Notre Dame grad and Minnesota Supreme Court Judge, played with Bob on the 1980 Chicago Bears team.

Some will remember that it was Mike Ditka who cut Bob from the Bears.

He played in the NFL from 1975 to 1986 and made 151 of 241 field goals (long 55) and 306 of 333 extra points. (Stats from databasefootball)

From the Democrat and Chronicle:

Although the University of Notre Dame football team featured Parade magazine All-America's at virtually every position, including kicker, the little-known Thomas tried out for the football team.

During his sophomore season (freshmen weren't eligible to play varsity sports back then), he kicked three field goals against North Carolina. A friend urged him to seize the opportunity and ask Irish coach Ara Parseghian for a football scholarship to fund his remaining three years at the university. Thomas was reluctant at first, but eventually broached the subject with his coach. Initially, Parseghian was noncommittal, but later rewarded Thomas with the free ride he was seeking.

Thomas repaid his coach's faith by kicking the winning field goal against Alabama in the waning moments of the 1973 Sugar Bowl to secure the national championship. He graduated with a degree in political science the following year, and was named first-team, Academic All-American?.

Mormon Smack

posted by Luke on Sun 15 of Jun, 2008 [22:48 UTC]
I was just going through some Notre Dame headlines and saw this article in the Deseret News about Brigham Young's Nike Training Camp, which is only available to Nike schools. Brigham Young had been lobbying Nike for 10 years until finally Nike relented and held a Nike Training Camp there. They had a total of 150 players attend, compared to the 600 that show up for Stanford and USC.

Here's the offending quote:

It's a coveted event. Nike schools like BYU are candidates. Reebok or Adidas or Under Armour schools need not apply. Sorry, Notre Dame.

I find it hard to believe that a writer that follows Brigham Young football would talk smack about Notre Dame over a Nike Training Camp. Obviously, it's a long off season...
