John Carlson played tight end for Notre Dame. He was recruited in 2003 in the same class with Greg Olsen?, who quickly tranferred to Miami?. When Anthony Fasano went pro in 2006, John Carlson moved into the starting role and became very productive.

He was drafted in the second round of the 2008 draft by the Seattle Seahawks.
